Belgacom TV

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

During summer 2005, Belgacom launched Belgacom TV, the first digital TV offer in Belgium.

A few months before the launch of Belgacom TV, the leading Belgian telecom operator took the whole market by surprise when it acquired the broadcasting rights for the Jupiler League, the Belgian first division football.

Technically, Belgacom TV is distributed via a telephone line with an xDSL solution.

In practice, Belgacom TV is the distribution platform on which the various elements that make up the telecom operator's offer are deployed. i.e., the Classic+ package of 70 channels, video on demand, thematic channel packages, and “11,” the channel that broadcasts all Belgian first-division matches.

The advantages of Belgacom TV over its competitors, besides the digital sound and viewing quality, are its channel offering and coverage.

Unlike traditional cable distributors, the distribution of Belgacom TV is not limited to a certain municipality or province. The Belgian operator’s TV offer will eventually cover the whole Belgian territory.

This direct competition with cable has provided TV viewers with more choice and flexibility, given the monopoly of cable distributors in the Belgian TV market.

At the end of September 2006, there were 102,071 Belgacom TV subscribers.

On 9 May 2005, the Professional Football League awarded the Belgacom Group the broadcasting rights to Belgian football for the next three years. 11, the Belgacom TV football channel airs all the Belgian football.
