Coat of arms of Libya

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Libyan coat of arms, although not exactly the same, remains similar to the one used whilst the country was part of the Federation of Arab Republics. The current coat of arms was adopted upon its exit from the Federation in 1977.

Akin to the flag, the colour green is prominent, providing a link to both the Green cloak of the prophet Muhammad as well as Colonel Gaddafi's Green Revolution.

The bird of prey shown in the coat of arms is the Hawk of Quraish, the emblem of the tribe of the prophet Muhammad.

Finally, the phrase "Union of Arab Republics" (i.e. Federation of Arab Republics), is written on the banner clutched in the feet of the hawk.
