Conflict: Desert Storm is the first game in the Conflict series.

The player takes control of a four-man squad, either in the British Special Air Service or the United States Delta Force, carrying out a variety of missions during the first Gulf War. Each soldier in the squad has a unique specialty, such as demolitions, sniper rifles, machine guns, and assault rifles. To complete each mission successfully, the player must utilize the skills of each squad member, such as using their demolitions expert to destroy bridges, their heavy weapons specialist to destroy tanks, etc. Prior to beginning a campaign, it is recommended that the player run through the basic training portion of the game, which will cover the use of the types of weapons found throughout the game, as well being trained in the use of artillery and air strikes, along with basic medical skills and squad maneuvers. The game includes a player-controllable Humvee and Bradley infantry fighting vehicle. The artillery stikes and air strikes are typically carried out by M270 MLRS launchers and A-10 Warthogs, respectively.

The game begins shortly after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990. During an attempt to destroy one of the bridges crossing the Iraq-Kuwait border, sniper Paul Foley is captured, while his other team member is killed. The next morning, John Bradley, a rifleman, and later on, squad leader, is sent in alone to rescue Foley and complete the original mission of destroying the bridge. Shortly after landing, Bradley comes into a firefight with a small force of Iraqi mechanized infantry. Shortly after rescuing Foley, Bradley completes the mission of destroying the bridge, thus slowing the Iraqi advance. From there, the squad carries out various missions, such as rescuing the Emir of Kuwait, engaging Iraqi forces in the Battle of Khafji, destroying Iraqi early-warning radar, rescuing POWs from a Baghdad military prison, and even leading an advance element of U.S. cavalry in a fight with the Tawalkana Division of the Iraqi Republican Guard.

A tactical third-person shooter.

The multiplayer allows players to complete the campaign co-operatively. The Playstation 2 version allows for 2-player co-op while the Xbox and Gamecube versions allow for 2-4 player co-op. The PC version does not support co-op.

  • John Bradley - Rifleman trained in the use of assault rifles and submachine guns, as well as the team member who calls in artillery and air strikes when needed.
  • Paul Foley - Sniper who specializes in long-range combat, trained in the use of all sniper rifles and pistols
  • Mick Connors - Heavy Weapons specialist trained in the use of machine guns and antitank weapons.
  • David Jones - Medic/Combat Engineer trained as a medic, along with explosives and mines. Weapons specialty is with submachine guns and shotguns.

The games producers have all stated that every mission in the game is based on real missions that were actually conducted by the British SAS during the Gulf War. The British government has denied these claims and states that there is no evidence to prove this. However ex-SAS troopers have come out saying that the SAS were involved in very similar operations and that almost all of the alligations are true. The alligation that SAS troops were involved in a mission to evacuate British nationals out of Kuwait City during the Iraqi invasion has caused much heated debate. Also, the alligation that an SAS Sniper was captured by the Iraqi's trying to blow a bridge and that a recue mission was launched to get him back has been hammered by the government. However SAS troopers insist that a mission did take place, some have even come out to say that they were involved in the rescue mission.
