The flag of Transnistria is a version of the former flag of Moldavian SSR. The current form is adopted by the 2000 Law about State Symbols.

It served as the republic's flag until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 with slightly different colors and no hammer and sickle or red star, although these symbols were sometimes used in the flag on some official occasions.

Transnistrian law permits the use a simplified version of the flag for non-governmental (e.g., personal and commercial) usage, without hammer and sickle and red star, and without regard to shape or size. For government usage, only the state flag is valid.
