Football at the 2008 Summer Olympics - Qualification

The qualification for the football tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games are played during 2006 to 2008. For men's qualification, only players born after January 1, 1985 are able to play.

A total of sixteen teams will participate in the final Olympic tournament. China is automatically qualified as the host country. The remainder of the field will be composed of:[1]

UEFA announced that the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship tournament in the Netherlands will also serve as the qualifying tournament for the Olympics.

CONMEBOL announced that the 2007 South American Youth Championship tournament in Paraguay (held in January 2007) also serves as the qualifying tournament for the Olympics. Brazil and Argentina finished first and second in that tournament, and have qualified for the Olympic tournament.[2]

Eight teams will participate in the final round of qualifying for two spots in the Olympics. Canada, Mexico, and the United States have qualified for this round already. From Central America, three teams will be chosen, and from the Caribbean, two other teams will participate in the final round.

Two groups of teams will play round-robin contests in November 2007, and the top team from each group qualifies to final round. In addition, the two second place teams will play a home and away series where the winner advances to the final round. Group A will play from November 7 to November 11, 2007 in Panama. While Group B will play from November 14 to November 18, 2007 in Guatemala.[3]

The qualification system for the Caribbean zone has not yet been determined. However, two teams will qualify to the final round.[3]

Preliminary competition will be divided in three rounds. First two rounds will be knock-out rounds, and the final round will be a group stage.

First leg played on September 1 to September 3, 2006. Second leg played on October 6 to October 8, 2006.

* = Congo DR failed to appeared and blamed for poor flight connections. FIFA had no excused and handed walkover to Senegal.[4]

Burkina Faso had been punished by FIFA for allegedly using overage players during first leg match against Ghana. The original score was Burkina Faso won by 2–0.[5]

First leg played on February 7 and second leg played on February 14, 2007. Winner advance to the second round.

The final round will played in three groups of four teams each held from August 22 to November 21, 2007. The winner of each group will represent Asia at the 2008 Olympic Games with host China.

A total of twelve teams will participate in the final Olympic tournament. China is automatically qualified as the host country. The remainder of the field will be composed of:[6]

Note: The second place teams from South American and African qualifying will play each other for the final spot.

UEFA announced that the 2007 Women's World Cup in China will also serve as the qualifying tournament for the Olympics.

CONMEBOL announced that the 2006 Sudamericano Femenino in Argentina will also serve as the qualifying tournament for the Olympics. Argentina won the tournament, and has qualified for the Olympics. Brazil will play the second-place African team for the final spot in the Olympics.

Two home and away series will be played, with the winners moving on to the final round. The first leg will play on October 6 and October 7, 2007. The second leg will play from October 13 and October 14, 2007. The winners of each tie will play in decisive final round on October 20 and October 27, 2007.[3]
