As the title suggests, Imperial China covers the nine hundred year period from the year A.D. 900 to 1800. In terms of Chinese history, it covers from the fall of the Tang Dynasty to the middle of the Qing Dynasty, shortly before the beginning of China’s Century of Humiliation. It covers the Five Dynasties, the Liao Dynasty, the Song Dynasty, the Xi Xia state, the Jin Dynasty, the Yuan Dynasty, the Ming Dynasty and the first century and a half of the Qing Dynasty.

The nearly one thousand pages of text are divided into five parts and are further divided into thirty-six chapters.
