The Islamic State of Afghanistan was the name given to the nation of Afghanistan during the rule of the United Islamic Front for the Salvation of Afghanistan government.

In 1996 the government was by the Taliban who established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. During the 1996-2001 phase of the Afghan Civil War, the United Nations and the vast majority of nations around the world did not recognize the Taliban as the ruler of the country. Instead, president Burhanuddin Rabbani's Islamic State regime, which controlled about 10% of the territory while by the end of 1998, the Taliban occupied about 90% of the country, limiting the opposition largely to a small mostly Tajik corner in the northeast and the Panjshir valley

After 2001, the country was renamed Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
