Kevin Payne, who compiled a 14-5-1 record during his 11-year professional career, died in an Evansville, Indiana, hospital at 2 PM, Sunday, March 19, 2006. Payne had won a 8-round split decision over Ryan Maraldo in a bout the night before in Evansville. Though he had won, Payne had to be helped from the ring, and taken to the hospital on a stretcher. The chief deputy coroner at the hospital, Annie Groves, stated that the cause of Payne's death was head trauma bleeding on the brain. It was subsequently reported, that Payne may have been complaining of headaches to people close to him prior to the Marlado bout; Payne however did not tell the commission doctor of any problems.

The bout with Maraldo was televised on Spanish language channel Azteca America, and was intended to serve as an eliminator to find an opponent for Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr on a televised bout the following month.

He is survived by his wife and two children.
