The Big Knife is a 1955 film noir made by The Associates & Aldrich Company and released by United Artists. It was directed and produced by Robert Aldrich from a screenplay by James Poe based on the play by Clifford Odets.
The film stars Jack Palance, Ida Lupino, Wendell Corey, Jean Hagen, Rod Steiger, Shelley Winters, Ilka Chase and Everett Sloane.
Jack Palance plays Charles Castle, a Hollywood A-list actor who refuses to renew his contract, enraging his studio boss, Stanley Shriner Hoff (played by Rod Steiger and reputedly based on Harry Cohn). Unbeknownst to Palance, his old boss has knowledge of a very damaging secret about the star. Steiger is willing to do anything to make the actor resign even if that means destroying his own career. The film is a ruthless and poignant look at fame and the movie business.
The film was nominated for the Leone d'Oro for Robert Aldrich at the Venice Film Festival and won the Silver Lion.
