List of Seinfeld episodes

"The Keys" is the fortieth episode of the sitcom Seinfeld. The episode was the 23rd and final episode for the third season and the first of a three-episode cliffhanger. It aired on May 6, 1992.

Kramer invades Jerry's life too much, so Jerry revokes his spare key privileges. Realizing that he has broken the "covenant of the keys" gives Kramer the realization he is now free to come out of the shadows. Kramer takes off for California to follow his dream of becoming an actor. Jerry gave his spare keys to Elaine, then when he needs them, he goes with George to Elaine's (who has her keys) to search for his spare set. What they find is Elaine's writing project for an episode of Murphy Brown. Kramer finds adventure as he journeys across the country to Los Angeles where he gets a famous bit part on Murphy Brown.

  • The music playing in the background when Jerry calls Kramer's mother, Babs, is the Pagliacci music, which would later be used in next season's "The Opera."
  • In this episode, Jerry jokes with a woman he dates about pretending to run into his apartment to escape from murderers. His date counters, "I'm from Wichita", a reference to the fact that Wichita was once terrorized by one of the most notorious serial killers of the century, the BTK Killer. While he was dormant at the time this episode aired, serial killer Dennis Rader finally was arrested and sentenced to life in prison in 2005.
